A laceration is a cut through the skin and the tissue below it. On the face, the repair does more than close the wound. It also protects the parts below the skin. It gives the best possible scar.
What surgeons check
- Depth and structures. They check the nerves that move the face. They check the tear-duct system near the eyes. They check the parotid duct in the cheek, which carries saliva. They also check if the wound goes into the mouth.
- Dirt. They clean out dirt and grit with care. This stops a permanent mark and stops infection.
- Lost tissue. They can close most wounds directly. A larger wound can need a reconstructionSurgery that rebuilds a part of the body..
The repair
The surgeon cleans the wound. Then the surgeon closes it in layers. This makes the surface sit flat, with as little tension as possible. Fine stitches, correct line-up of landmarks such as the lip border, and good aftercare all help the scar to fade.
